![]() I was waxing nostalgic the other day about the small town I grew up in. It was a university town, so things were jumping a good part of the year. But come summer, it reverted. Summer meant dogs sleeping in the streets and escaped cows bringing out the entire police force to round 'em up. An uptown fire was a real highlight, as was somebody's flock of chickens getting into the church. (The animals did seem to have things their own way.) There were always a few folks who monitored police radios and gave everyone blow-by-blow descriptions of the action. The Cow-Capdes in particular usually involved hours of entertainment. It was Mayberry RFD, if Mayberry had a state university smack dab in the middle of it. Nowadays this would all be on Twitter and YouTube, and I’m not sure we’re better off for it. There’s another profession made obsolete by the internet: town gossip. Comments are closed.
