From Booth Again!, a collection by one of my favorite cartoonists, George Booth:
"Jesus said, 'That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.' Be ye therefore among them that hath." Even Jesus isn't paying attention to the women. I tell you, it's our super-power. Horrible news out of Mississippi this morning. Overnight storms spawned a number of tornadoes, one of which was about a mile wide and stayed on the ground from one side of the state to the other. This tornado leveled the town of Rolling Fork, and Silver City was similarly devastated. At least 24 were reported dead.
A number of storm chasers were in the area last night, and they were first on the ground to report on the damage and begin transporting injured persons to hospitals. The weather YouTubers who followed their stories began collecting funds for supplies to send to victims of the tornadoes. Storm chasers - and YouTubers - can have questionable reputations sometimes, but it was amazing to watch them step up to help. The storm chasers in particular continued to put themselves in harm's way since the storm system was still spawning new twisters, and with the power out in many areas they couldn't see them. But I want to remember the ones who are nearly always forgotten in these tragedies: the animals, including livestock and pets. Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms often hit in spring, just when the babies are being born. And while we can save our pets, the critters that live outdoors stand no chance. Mother Nature, you're a heartless bitch. I hated this when I was a kid, and I hate it even more now that I'm old. ![]() I have a sweet tooth. A whole mouthful of 'em, in fact. When I was growing up, my mother tried to encourage healthful eating by saying that carrots would give me good vision (they didn't) and that protein was "brain food" (nope - not unless you're a zombie and brains are food). Imagine my delight when I discovered that glucose is the brain's main energy source. Unfortunately glucose comes from complex carbohydrates - things such as whole grains, legumes, and beans. It doesn't come from Reese's peanut butter cups, and I want a word with management. Scientists could solve the whole obesity thingie by figuring out how to make broccoli taste like chocolate cake. Seems like this would be a lot easier than trying to convince millions of people to do things they find unpleasant, such as dieting and exercising. We certainly have ample evidence that the latter approach doesn't work. ... is that we did all of our stupid shite before the invention of the Internet, so there's no evidence.
