Ticks harbor and excrete chronic wasting disease prions Prions, for those who don't know, are misfolded proteins that can cause a number of awful, incurable and untreatable diseases, among them BSE (or Mad Cow Disease) or the above mentioned chronic wasting disease in cervids. Did I mention that these diseases are fatal? Note to self: Buy a treadmill or other exercise equipment, because I am not going outdoors anymore except to run between buildings and my car. I have also reconsidered my opinion on how to dispose of ticks. The advice I've seen is to drop them into rubbing alcohol, which I considered cruel. Nope, rubbing alcohol it is, and then set the corpse on fire. (Which, according to the professor who taught my virology lectures, won't kill the prions. I'm not sure even a nuclear strike will kill prions.) Comments are closed.
